Saudi Arabia Withdraws Its Bid to Host the 2030 World Cup

Saudi Arabia Withdraws Its Bid to Host the 2030 World Cup

Saudi Arabia, which previously planned to make a joint bid with Egypt and Greece to host the 2030 World Cup, has reportedly decided to withdraw its application. A key factor in this is the widespread belief that the 2030 World Cup should be held in Europe, and the Saudi government's decision is in line with the prevailing fan sentiment.

In April, Egypt announced its decision to withdraw from its joint bid to host the World Cup, mainly due to its socio-political background and the challenges that come with hosting the globally tournament. Athens, meanwhile, turned down the opportunity due to concerns about the economic and political crisis at home, despite Saudi Arabia's offer to invest in the required sports infrastructure.

Under previous plans, Saudi Arabia would host 75% of the 2030 FIFA World Cup matches, while pledging to provide Greece with funding for a new stadium and other ancillary facilities. In order to increase its influence in soccer, the Saudi league has already signed stars from Europe including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and others.

As a result, the withdrawal of the joint bid by Greece, Saudi Arabia and Egypt means that the 2030 World Cup host will have a better chance of being jointly awarded to Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Currently competing with them is a joint bid from four South American countries, including Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.
